Inflation and purchasing power
Translate a supplied amount between future nominal money and today’s purchasing power using an explicit assumed inflation rate.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
future equivalent = present amount × (1 + annual inflation)^years; today value = future amount / (1 + inflation)^years
Uses your supplied constant inflation assumption, not a live or historical CPI dataset. It does not predict specific product prices, wages or investment returns. Negative inflation is supported within the stated bounds. US dollar purchasing power is a model; actual household price changes can differ.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Amount to compare (selected currency): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Projection length entry: Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Years to project (years): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero. Used with: Whole years.
- Months to project (months): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero. Used with: Whole months.
- Assumed annual inflation (%): Your assumed constant annual inflation rate. It changes purchasing-power comparisons only; this is not a live CPI lookup or prediction.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Future amount matching today’s entered purchasing power is $12,800.85 for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Amount to compare: $10,000.00
- Projection length entry: Whole years
- Years to project: 10 years
- Assumed annual inflation: 2.50 %
- Future amount matching today’s entered purchasing power
- $12,800.85
- Today-money value of the same nominal future amount
- $7,811.98
- Cumulative assumed price change
- 28.0085 %
- Purchasing-power change of unchanged nominal money
- -21.8802 %
- Future equivalent and today-money value are two separate interpretations of the entered amount, not amounts to add together.
- ━ Future equivalent of today’s amount
- ┄ Today-value of unchanged future amount
These illustrative values are not recommended rates or industry averages. Replace every example input with your own figures.
Use the result well
Translate a supplied amount between future nominal money and today’s purchasing power using an explicit assumed inflation rate.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
