Emergency fund target and saving time
Work out a cash reserve from essential monthly spending and your chosen coverage period, then estimate the remaining saving time.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
reserve target = essential monthly expenses × supplied months + separate contingency; time = ceil(remaining gap / monthly deposits)
You choose the reserve coverage and contingency; the example does not prescribe an appropriate emergency fund. Use essential monthly cash expenses on a consistent basis, including monthly shares of irregular essentials if desired. Contingency is additional and must not repeat amounts already included. Saving-time arithmetic assumes fixed deposits, no withdrawals and no interest. Funding this reserve must not be counted as a second expense if it is already included in another budget.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Essential expenses on a monthly basis: Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Expense: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for expense. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Monthly amount (selected currency): Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for monthly amount. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Your chosen months of expense coverage (months): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Additional contingency outside those monthly expenses (selected currency): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Current funds set aside for emergencies (selected currency): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Amount available to add each month (selected currency): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Emergency reserve target on supplied basis is $6,000.00 for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Essential expenses on a monthly basis
- Expense: Housing
- Monthly amount: $1,000.00
- Expense: Other essentials
- Monthly amount: $1,000.00

- Additional contingency outside those monthly expenses: $0.00
- Current funds set aside for emergencies: $1,000.00
- Amount available to add each month: $250.00
- Emergency reserve target on supplied basis
- $6,000.00
- Essential monthly spending entered
- $2,000.00
- Additional funds needed
- $5,000.00
- Whole months to fund remaining gap

Use the result well
Work out a cash reserve from essential monthly spending and your chosen coverage period, then estimate the remaining saving time.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
