Debt to income ratio
Compare supplied required monthly debt payments with gross monthly income without assigning a lender approval threshold.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
debt-to-income percent = required monthly debt payments / gross monthly income × 100
Use gross income, not take-home pay, and monthly required debt payments, not debt balances. The housing field is whatever obligation your comparison requires; do not duplicate it in other debts. Lenders and programs can define income and included obligations differently. No approval, affordability judgment, credit eligibility or universal acceptable ratio is supplied; gross income remaining is not spendable cash.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Gross monthly income before taxes and deductions (selected currency): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Monthly housing obligation included in your comparison (selected currency): Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Other required monthly debt payments — exclude housing above: Use matching records or a clearly stated assumption for the indicated period. Prefilled figures are illustrative. An unknown value is not zero.
- Debt: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for debt. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Required monthly payment (selected currency): Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for required monthly payment. Unknown is not the same as zero.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.

Use the result well
Compare supplied required monthly debt payments with gross monthly income without assigning a lender approval threshold.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
