Fleet and transport calculators

How to choose a calculation

Compare the cost of waiting with the cost of taking a longer route, using the extra miles and minutes for the whole decision. A detour can cost fuel, wear, tolls and crew time, while a wait may have costs from vehicle or crew time and a missed appointment. Use separate late costs when the alternatives have different consequences.

If you are considering a cheaper fuel stop, compare the savings on the gallons you expect to buy with the added round-trip distance and time. Use prices with the same tax and discount basis. For a contract surcharge, retain the reference date, location, fuel economy basis and eligible mileage required by the agreement.

Test a range of wait times and look for the point where the price difference changes direction. The least expensive modeled route can still be unsuitable when access is restricted, a bridge is unconfirmed or the driver is near a duty limit. Check current conditions and the applicable route and vehicle requirements before dispatch.

Detour break-even calculator uses records for extra detour distance, Extra detour time, Fuel economy, and Entered fuel price per gallon. Cheaper fuel detour break-even uses records for gallons to purchase, Original price per gallon, Alternative price per gallon, and Extra round-trip distance. Diesel fuel surcharge calculator uses records for reference observation date (YYYY-MM-DD), Reference region or source, Dated diesel reference per gallon, and Contract base fuel price per gallon.

Start with these calculators

  1. Detour break-even calculator — Compare waiting with driving a detour and find the break-even delay.
  2. Cheaper fuel detour break-even — Find how much extra driving or time a fuel price difference can pay for.
  3. Diesel fuel surcharge calculator — Estimate a per-mile and total fuel surcharge from a dated diesel price reference.
  4. Fleet cost per mile — Add your vehicle operating, ownership and driver costs, then divide by productive miles for the same period.
  5. Fleet empty miles profitability — Expose unpaid mileage effect on required billable-mile rate.
