Heating Oil Cost Calculator

Use measured US gallon consumption or calculate required fuel from useful heat, energy content and efficiency. EIA averages are dated references, not your supplier price. Gas Mcf means 1,000 cubic feet; therms are energy units and must not be entered as Mcf.

Fetch the most recent published pricing available from EIA

US residential or wholesale price averages excluding taxes. Weekly observations in the October–March heating season; the cited EIA series reports one observation per month in April–September. A refresh retrieves a report, not a live supplier quote. Applying a reference is a separate action.

No report loaded. Enter your actual rate manually if preferred.

Unavailable regions and withheld values are omitted; an older value is never silently substituted.

Your consumption and costs

Choose one consistent reporting period. Use a decimal point and optional comma thousands (1,234.56). Zero means intentionally zero.

How this calculation works

Fuel units = measured fuel OR useful thermal kWh × 3412.14163312794 Btu/kWh ÷ (Btu per fuel unit × efficiency%); fuel cost = fuel units × matching USD per unit.

Use the results responsibly

  • All figures refer to one user-chosen period. These are energy-cost scenarios, not complete utility bills or supplier offers.
  • Electricity/natural-gas reference averages are monthly and published with a lag. Propane/heating-oil prices are seasonal reported averages excluding taxes.
  • Do not add a fixed bill component again if the supplied average already includes it. Actual tariffs may have tiers, minimum charges, demand charges, taxes and credits not modeled here.
  • Heat-content examples are approximate. Confirm the correct fuel grade, composition, heat content, efficiency and unit against your own documents.

Calculations run on your device. No quantities or bill amounts are sent to EIA. Reference requests retrieve fixed public report URLs through BusCalc. Nothing saves automatically; downloaded receipts are unsigned, editable records of supplied inputs, not certified bills. Full specialty reports are not automatically included in paid packages.
