Crop gross margin per acre
Calculate enterprise gross margin from harvested output, realized prices and entered variable field costs.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
gross margin = harvested quantity × realized price - variable enterprise costs; margin/acre = gross margin / harvested acres
This is an enterprise-budget worksheet using supplied quantities, prices and assumptions. No feeding ration, treatment, stocking rate, fertilizer, pesticide, yield forecast or equipment suitability is prescribed. Harvest quantity and price must use the same sale unit, such as boxes or pounds. Use actual output or label it as an assumption. Fixed land/machinery ownership, taxes and unentered labor remain excluded; no crop yield is predicted.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Harvested field area (acre): Own yield/sales, crop ledger and entered acreage. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Total harvested sale units (your matching sale units): Own yield/sales, crop ledger and entered acreage. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Realized price per matching sale unit (selected currency): Own yield/sales, crop ledger and entered acreage. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Other actual enterprise receipts not already counted (selected currency): Own yield/sales, crop ledger and entered acreage. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Variable enterprise costs for this field: Own yield/sales, crop ledger and entered acreage. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Cost description: Own yield/sales, crop ledger and entered acreage. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Cost amount (selected currency): Own yield/sales, crop ledger and entered acreage. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Gross margin per harvested acre is $450.00 for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Harvested field area: 10.00 acre
- Total harvested sale units: 1,000.00 your matching sale units
- Realized price per matching sale unit: $8.00
- Other actual enterprise receipts not already counted: $0.00
- Variable enterprise costs for this field
- Cost description: Expense 1
- Cost amount: $2,500.00
- Cost description: Expense 2
- Cost amount: $1,000.00
- Gross margin per harvested acre
- $450.00
- Field gross margin before fixed overhead
- $4,500.00
- Gross crop receipts
- $8,000.00

Use the result well
Compare own enterprise contribution.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
