Financial calculator
Use this financial calculator to solve time-value-of-money unknowns and evaluate cash-flow NPV and IRR with explicit signs and payment timing.
Method version1.0.0 · Reviewed November1,2026 · Calculated on your device
Your calculation
Choose a method, then enter your figures. Examples are illustrative, not recommended settings or rates.
How this calculation works
PV(1+r)^n + PMT × annuityFactor(r,n,timing) + FV =0; NPV = Σ cashFlow[t]/(1+r)^t.
What information do I need?
Only fields for your selected method are required. Use consistent units and scope. Changing an entry method or unit system does not convert the numbers already entered. Previously calculated results are cleared when inputs change.
Input definitions and where to find them
- What would you like to calculate?
- Choose the method matching your inputs.
- Which value is unknown?
- The selected unknown is hidden; complete the remaining values.
- Payments occur
- Use the timing in your agreement or scenario.
- Present value — signed USD
- Outflows are negative; receipts are positive. Use the viewpoint of one party.
- Payment each period — signed USD
- Enter zero when there are no recurring payments.
- Future value — signed USD
- This is a cash flow at the end of the final period.
- Number of equal payment periods
- For monthly payments, enter months. Fractional periods are allowed mathematically.
- Interest rate per payment period (%)
- For an annual nominal rate of12% with monthly compounding, enter1. An APY needs a different conversion.
- Signed cash flows in time order
- First entry is time zero. Remaining entries are at equal period ends. Use commas or new lines; no thousands separators.
- Discount rate per cash-flow period (%)
- Enter an assumed discount rate on the same time basis as the cash flows.
Worked example
This example uses the initial method shown in the selector. Load an example in the form to try it.
Example inputs
- What would you like to calculate?: tvm
- Which value is unknown?: fv
- Payments occur: end
- Present value — signed USD: -10000
- Payment each period — signed USD: 0
- Number of equal payment periods: 10
- Interest rate per payment period (%): 5
Example answer: Solved future value = 16,288.9463 USD
Use the result well
Cash-flow signs matter: money paid out is negative and money received is positive. Enter interest per payment period, not an annual rate unless payments are annual. Fractional periods are mathematical results, not an automatic payment schedule. Rate solving is limited to a unique conventional flow bracket from -89% to100% per period.
Review the limits shown with each result. Browser arithmetic has finite precision; small differences may reflect rounding. Print or download important results before closing the tab.
