Liquid pour yield and shrinkage
Estimate keg or bottle servings and beverage cost while separating discarded foam, draft-line purges, other measured losses and free-pour variance.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
available liquid = starting volume - foam loss - line loss - other loss; whole servings = floor(available / actual mean pour); line volume = π × inside diameter² / 4 × length
Use supplied label volumes, invoices, settled-liquid loss measurements and actual pour tests. No standard foam loss, recommended shrinkage allowance or universal timed-pour rate is assumed. Expanded foam is not liquid volume. Target size is operator-supplied; no legal serving-size, alcohol-content, safe-consumption, cleaning procedure, draft pressure setting or tax assessment is provided. Samples must represent the same drink and conditions. This is batch planning, not POS/inventory reconciliation or proof of theft.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- What are you dispensing?: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for what are you dispensing?. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Starting product volume entry: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for starting product volume entry. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Starting product volume for this complete batch (L): Measure actual liquid volume. Select mL, liters, US fluid ounces or US gallons. A US fluid ounce is volume, not weight. Exclude ice and expanded foam from liquid measurements. Used with: I know the total liquid volume.
- Labeled liquid volume per keg or bottle (mL): Measure actual liquid volume. Select mL, liters, US fluid ounces or US gallons. A US fluid ounce is volume, not weight. Exclude ice and expanded foam from liquid measurements. Used with: Container volume multiplied by container count.
- Number of matching containers (containers): Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for number of matching containers. Unknown is not the same as zero. Used with: Container volume multiplied by container count.

- Measured pours for the same drink specification: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for measured pours for the same drink specification. Unknown is not the same as zero. Used with: Individual measured test pours.
- Pour test: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for pour test. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Measured liquid in this test pour (mL): Measure actual liquid volume. Select mL, liters, US fluid ounces or US gallons. A US fluid ounce is volume, not weight. Exclude ice and expanded foam from liquid measurements.
- Discarded foam loss entry: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for discarded foam loss entry. Unknown is not the same as zero. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage.
- Discarded foam measured after settling to liquid (mL): Measure actual liquid volume. Select mL, liters, US fluid ounces or US gallons. A US fluid ounce is volume, not weight. Exclude ice and expanded foam from liquid measurements. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage, Known collapsed-liquid loss.
- Foam liquid loss as percent of starting batch (%): Percent of ORIGINAL starting liquid volume. Supply a measured or explicit assumed figure. Expanded foam and head served to a customer are not automatically discarded liquid. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage, Assumed percent of starting liquid volume.
- Draft-line loss entry: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for draft-line loss entry. Unknown is not the same as zero. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage.

Exclude ice and expanded foam from liquid measurements. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage, Measured discarded product per event.
- Product-carrying line segments discarded in each event: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for product-carrying line segments discarded in each event. Unknown is not the same as zero. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage, Estimate from line dimensions.
- Segment description: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for segment description. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Segment length (ft): Use actual inside dimensions, not outside diameter or a nominal fitting size. Select meters, feet or inches.
- Actual inside diameter (in): Use actual inside dimensions, not outside diameter or a nominal fitting size. Select meters, feet or inches.
- Identical segments (segments): Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for identical segments. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Equivalent line volumes of product discarded per event (line volumes/event): 1 means one complete product-filled line volume is discarded. Count extra product for priming only when discarded. Cleaning water and chemicals are not beverage loss. Unlisted equipment volumes are excluded. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage, Estimate from line dimensions.
- Matching line-discard events charged to this batch (events): Count only events whose beverage belongs to this batch. Do not charge a whole cleaning event separately to each keg. Product retained for later sale is not a discard. Used with: Draft beer or another kegged beverage, measured, geometry.
- Other non-sale liquid removed from this batch (mL): Measure actual liquid volume. Select mL, liters, US fluid ounces or US gallons. A US fluid ounce is volume, not weight. Exclude ice and expanded foam from liquid measurements.
- Net selling price per full serving, excluding sales tax (selected currency): Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for net selling price per full serving, excluding sales tax. Unknown is not the same as zero.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.

- Liquid results are in mL; 1,000 mL = 1 liter. Inputs also accept US liquid units. Use one product, drink specification and matching batch cost basis.
- Foam percent uses starting volume. Non-sale categories are added once. Other non-sale liquid can include spills, samples, complimentary pours or unusable residue; exclude any foam or line losses already entered.
- Overpour is served liquid, not a second waste deduction. Serving difference compares the same post-loss stock at target and mean pours. Underpour is a variance, not a recommended saving.
- A line full of product is not inherently lost. Geometry includes listed round inside volumes only. Charge only product actually or explicitly assumed discarded, not cleaning chemicals or rinse water.
- Mean-pour servings are a planning estimate, not an exact count under variable pours. Sample spread describes these tests only, not statistical confidence or a prediction.
- Remainder is unsold liquid in this whole-serving scenario, not automatically waste. Entire-batch cost per whole serving allocates the full purchase cost including losses and remainder; mean-serving liquid cost does not. Gross sales assume every whole serving sells. No labor, mixers, CO₂, cleaning, tax or overhead is added; these figures are not net profit.
These illustrative values are not recommended rates or industry averages. Replace every example input with your own figures.
Use the result well
Compare separately recorded discard losses with measured pour-size variance. Improve measurements first; review actual recipes and operating records before changing prices or handling practices.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
