How this calculation works

stock available = opening inventory + purchases + transfers in; usage = available - closing inventory - transfers out

Value all stock on a consistent cost basis, with the same locations and period boundaries. Usage may include waste and staff meals; it is not proof every item was sold. Use actual food sales, not food-plus-beverage revenue, if this inventory includes food only.

What information do I need?

Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.

Input definitions and where to find them
  • Opening food inventory at cost (selected currency): Physical inventory valuation, receiving invoices, transfers. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Food purchases during period (selected currency): Physical inventory valuation, receiving invoices, transfers. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Food transfers in at cost (selected currency): Physical inventory valuation, receiving invoices, transfers. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Closing food inventory at cost (selected currency): Physical inventory valuation, receiving invoices, transfers. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Food transfers out at cost (selected currency): Physical inventory valuation, receiving invoices, transfers. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Net food sales in same period (selected currency): Physical inventory valuation, receiving invoices, transfers. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.

Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.

Worked example

Example amounts use US dollars (USD).

Example answer: Food inventory usage cost is $13,000.00 for the illustrative inputs below.

Use the result well

Reconcile purchases to consumed stock.

Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
