Insulation batts rolls and boards
Calculate whole insulation packages from measured area, layers and the coverage stated for your selected product and installation.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
coverage target = net insulated area × layers × allowance; packages = ceil(target / supplied package coverage)
Quantity and supplied-cost arithmetic only. Verify measurements, product coverage and purchasing units. Prefilled values and allowances are illustrative, not recommended specifications. No structural sizing, code approval, installation design or optimized cutting layout is supplied. Optional zero prices are omitted; unknown costs are not assumed free. Applies area coverage to batts, rolls or rigid boards. Supply product coverage at the intended thickness and fitted dimensions, allowing for obstructions. Multiple layers do not automatically establish a rated assembly R-value. This does not select insulation thickness, vapor control, fire protection, ventilation or code compliance. Blown-in insulation needs product-specific density/settled-depth coverage; no density is inferred here.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Area entry method: Use a measured quantity, product label, supplier quote or explicit assumption on the stated basis. Zero is intentional exclusion, not an unknown value.
- Measured area before separate deductions (ft²): Enter square area, not a length. Use the stated installed, net or package coverage basis; openings are deducted only once. Used with: I know the measured area.
- Rectangular wall, ceiling or ground surfaces: Use a measured quantity, product label, supplier quote or explicit assumption on the stated basis. Zero is intentional exclusion, not an unknown value. Used with: Measure rectangular surfaces.
- Surface name: Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for surface name. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Surface length (ft): Measure this dimension and select feet, inches or meters. Use actual product dimensions rather than a nominal trade size unless this field explicitly asks for nominal module coverage.
- Surface width or height (ft): Measure this dimension and select feet, inches or meters. Use actual product dimensions rather than a nominal trade size unless this field explicitly asks for nominal module coverage.
- Openings or excluded area to deduct once (ft²): Enter square area, not a length. Use the stated installed, net or package coverage basis; openings are deducted only once.
- Number of separately required coverage layers (layers): Use a measured quantity, product label, supplier quote or explicit assumption on the stated basis. Zero is intentional exclusion, not an unknown value.
- Your extra material allowance (%): Extra material above the net measured requirement. Supply an allowance appropriate to your cuts, handling and product; the example is not an industry recommendation.
- Product coverage per package for the chosen thickness (ft²): Enter square area, not a length. Use the stated installed, net or package coverage basis; openings are deducted only once.
- Optional price per package (selected currency): Use a measured quantity, product label, supplier quote or explicit assumption on the stated basis. Zero is intentional exclusion, not an unknown value.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Net area to insulate is 200.00 ft² for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Area entry method: I know the measured area
- Measured area before separate deductions: 200.00 ft²
- Openings or excluded area to deduct once: 0.00 ft²
- Number of separately required coverage layers: 1 layers
- Your extra material allowance: 10.00 %
- Product coverage per package for the chosen thickness: 100.00 ft²
- Optional price per package: $0.00
- Net area to insulate
- 200.00 ft²
- Total layer-area before allowance
- 200.00 ft²
- Coverage target including allowance
- 220.00 ft²
- Whole insulation packages
- 3 packages
- Purchased coverage above layer-area
- 100.00 ft²
- Insulation material subtotal
- No price supplied
These illustrative values are not recommended rates or industry averages. Replace every example input with your own figures.
Use the result well
Compare net installed quantities with allowances and whole purchased units. Review product instructions and missing materials before ordering.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
