Your inputs

Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.

How this calculation works

period cash cost/mile = (fuel bought × price + other period cash expenses) / period total business miles

Use the amount shown to the driver; it may already include tips or platform deductions. Add only amounts not already included. Include pickup, delivery, waiting and allocated unpaid return travel. Results are before income taxes and describe the supplied scenario, not promised platform earnings. Allocations must consistently match the mileage period. Exclude personal-use costs or allocate them explicitly. Zero for wear excludes that economic cost; it does not mean the vehicle has no wear. Loan principal, depreciation and purchase price must not be counted twice. No mileage-tax rate is supplied.

What information do I need?

Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.

Input definitions and where to find them
  • Total business distance for cost-record period (mi): Fuel/charge/maintenance/insurance allocation, depreciation and mileage log. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Fuel allocated to that distance (US gal): Fuel/charge/maintenance/insurance allocation, depreciation and mileage log. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Average paid fuel price (currency/US gal): Fuel/charge/maintenance/insurance allocation, depreciation and mileage log. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Other cash costs allocated to this same mileage period: Fuel/charge/maintenance/insurance allocation, depreciation and mileage log. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
    • Cost description: Fuel/charge/maintenance/insurance allocation, depreciation and mileage log. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
    • Cost amount (selected currency): Fuel/charge/maintenance/insurance allocation, depreciation and mileage log. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Optional separate economic wear/depreciation allocation for period (selected currency): Fuel/charge/maintenance/insurance allocation, depreciation and mileage log. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.

Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.

Worked example

Example amounts use US dollars (USD).

Example answer: Entered cash operating cost per total mile is $0.34 for the illustrative inputs below.

Example inputs

Use the result well

Build consistent offer-cost basis.

Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
