Concrete steps volume
Estimate a solid rectangular stair-step mass from equal supplied risers and treads, plus an optional separate landing.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
solid stepped volume = width × tread run × riser height × steps × (steps + 1) / 2; separate landing = landing area × thickness
Quantity and supplied-cost arithmetic only. Verify measurements, product coverage and purchasing units. Prefilled values and allowances are illustrative, not recommended specifications. No structural sizing, code approval, installation design or optimized cutting layout is supplied. Optional zero prices are omitted; unknown costs are not assumed free. Full solid staircase, supported on a flat bottom; it is not a sloped waist slab, hollow/filled stair, floating stair or precast design. Step count means full tread-depth blocks of successively greater height. Supply verified dimensions; this does not check compliant rise/run, landings, reinforcement or safe access. An additional landing must be outside the stepped mass so volume is not counted twice.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Overall stair width (ft): Measure this dimension and select feet, inches or meters. Use actual product dimensions rather than a nominal trade size unless this field explicitly asks for nominal module coverage.
- Horizontal depth of each step block (ft): Measure this dimension and select feet, inches or meters. Use actual product dimensions rather than a nominal trade size unless this field explicitly asks for nominal module coverage.
- Height of each equal riser (ft): Measure this dimension and select feet, inches or meters. Use actual product dimensions rather than a nominal trade size unless this field explicitly asks for nominal module coverage.
- Number of equal solid step blocks (steps): Use a measured quantity, product label, supplier quote or explicit assumption on the stated basis. Zero is intentional exclusion, not an unknown value.
- Additional independent landing area (0 for none) (ft²): Enter square area, not a length. Use the stated installed, net or package coverage basis; openings are deducted only once.
- Thickness of the additional landing (ft): Measure this dimension and select feet, inches or meters. Use actual product dimensions rather than a nominal trade size unless this field explicitly asks for nominal module coverage.
- Your extra material allowance (%): Extra material above the net measured requirement. Supply an allowance appropriate to your cuts, handling and product; the example is not an industry recommendation.
- Actual mixed concrete yield per bag (ft³): Use volume in cubic feet, cubic yards or cubic meters. For bags, read the actual mixed/delivered yield per bag; bag weight is not bag volume.
- Optional price per cubic yard (selected currency): Use a measured quantity, product label, supplier quote or explicit assumption on the stated basis. Zero is intentional exclusion, not an unknown value.
- Optional price per bag (selected currency): Use a measured quantity, product label, supplier quote or explicit assumption on the stated basis. Zero is intentional exclusion, not an unknown value.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Net concrete volume is 0.4444 yd³ for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Overall stair width: 4.00 ft
- Horizontal depth of each step block: 1.00 ft
- Height of each equal riser: 0.50 ft
- Number of equal solid step blocks: 3 steps
- Additional independent landing area (0 for none): 0.00 ft²
- Thickness of the additional landing: 0.50 ft
- Your extra material allowance: 10.00 %
- Actual mixed concrete yield per bag: 0.60 ft³
- Optional price per cubic yard: $0.00
- Optional price per bag: $0.00
- Net concrete volume
- 0.4444 yd³
- Order volume including allowance
- 0.4889 yd³
- Whole bags at supplied yield
- 22 bags
- Bagged volume after rounding
- 0.4889 yd³
- Ready-mix material subtotal
- No price supplied
- Bagged material subtotal
- No price supplied
- Ready-mix and bagged material subtotals are alternatives, not costs to add together. Delivery, minimum loads, labor and unentered charges are excluded.
These illustrative values are not recommended rates or industry averages. Replace every example input with your own figures.
Use the result well
Compare net installed quantities with allowances and whole purchased units. Review product instructions and missing materials before ordering.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
