Time & work hours
Time duration
Find time between two clock readings, including an explicit end-day offset and optional excluded minutes.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
elapsed minutes = end clock - start clock + end-day offset × 1440; net minutes = elapsed minutes - excluded minutes
Clock arithmetic uses entered readings on a uniform 24-hour day. It does not adjust for time zones, daylight-saving changes or leap seconds. For an actual elapsed interval crossing an offset change, first express both readings in the same fixed offset or UTC. Exclusions are supplied amounts, not a determination of paid or unpaid time.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Start time (24-hour HH:MM): Enter a 24-hour clock time as HH:MM, for example 08:30, 13:15 or 23:45. Midnight is 00:00.
- End time (24-hour HH:MM): Enter a 24-hour clock time as HH:MM, for example 08:30, 13:15 or 23:45. Midnight is 00:00.
- End time is this many calendar days after start (days): Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for end time is this many calendar days after start. Unknown is not the same as zero.
- Minutes to exclude from the duration (minutes): Use matching records or an explicitly identified assumption for minutes to exclude from the duration. Unknown is not the same as zero.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Net duration in decimal hours is 8.250000 hours for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Start time (24-hour HH:MM): 08:30
- End time (24-hour HH:MM): 17:15
- End time is this many calendar days after start: 0 days
- Minutes to exclude from the duration: 30.00 minutes
- Net duration in decimal hours
- 8.250000 hours
- Net hours and minutes
- 8 h 15 min
- Elapsed duration before exclusions
- 525.00 minutes
- Net duration
- 495.00 minutes
These illustrative values are not recommended rates or industry averages. Replace every example input with your own figures.
Use the result well
Find time between two clock readings, including an explicit end-day offset and optional excluded minutes.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
