Farming livestock
Livestock gross margin per head
Reconcile a completed livestock group sale against its entered direct enterprise costs.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
group gross margin = sale receipts - animal acquisition - other direct enterprise costs; margin/head = group margin / head sold
This is an enterprise-budget worksheet using supplied quantities, prices and assumptions. No feeding ration, treatment, stocking rate, fertilizer, pesticide, yield forecast or equipment suitability is prescribed. Match sale receipts and acquisition/direct costs to the same animals. Do not count feed twice. Gross margin still excludes any unentered land, equipment, family labor or other fixed costs and is not after-tax profit.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Animals sold in this group (head): Sale/purchase settlements, feed/hauling costs, owner inventory valuation. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Group gross sale receipts (selected currency): Sale/purchase settlements, feed/hauling costs, owner inventory valuation. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Acquisition cost allocated to these animals (selected currency): Sale/purchase settlements, feed/hauling costs, owner inventory valuation. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Other direct group costs such as feed and transport: Sale/purchase settlements, feed/hauling costs, owner inventory valuation. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Cost description: Sale/purchase settlements, feed/hauling costs, owner inventory valuation. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Cost amount (selected currency): Sale/purchase settlements, feed/hauling costs, owner inventory valuation. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Gross margin per head sold is $350.00 for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Animals sold in this group: 20 head
- Group gross sale receipts: $30,000.00
- Acquisition cost allocated to these animals: $18,000.00
- Other direct group costs such as feed and transport
- Cost description: Expense 1
- Cost amount: $4,000.00
- Cost description: Expense 2
- Cost amount: $1,000.00
- Gross margin per head sold
- $350.00
- Group gross margin before fixed overhead
- $7,000.00
- Total entered direct costs
- $23,000.00

Use the result well

Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
