Fleet
Fleet electric vs fuel vehicle economics
Compare supplied vehicle purchase energy upkeep and resale scenarios.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
PV cash flows per option; report cost per mile and crossover.
Equal horizons. Initial costs occur now; future costs and resale occur at the end of the entered year. Enter every relevant cash flow, including replacements. Prices are nominal cash amounts; discount rate must use the same nominal basis. No taxes, financing, depreciation or reserve contributions are added. Results compare supplied scenarios, not equipment suitability. Same annual distance for both vehicles. Include charging, fuel, maintenance and replacements.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Option A initial cost (selected currency): Fuel vehicle acquisition cash.
- Option B initial cost (selected currency): Electric vehicle acquisition cash.
- Common comparison horizon (years): Use matching records or a clearly identified owner assumption for common comparison horizon, in the displayed unit and the stated row/period scope.
- Annual discount rate (%): Explicit owner-selected scenario rate matching the period and nominal/real cash-flow basis; not a guaranteed return.
- Option A resale at horizon (selected currency): Owner-supplied expected sale receipt at the stated end date; scenario assumption, not market appraisal.
- Option B resale at horizon (selected currency): Owner-supplied expected sale receipt at the stated end date; scenario assumption, not market appraisal.
- Annual future costs: One row per distinct annual future costs, on the stated row and period basis. Do not enter both components and their total.
- Year (year): Use matching records or a clearly identified owner assumption for year, in the displayed unit and the stated row/period scope.
- Option A cost (selected currency): Matching invoice, quote, statement, bookkeeping record or explicit budget amount for option a cost. Use the stated period and exclude amounts already counted in another field. Zero means intentionally excluded/not incurred, not unknown.
- Option B cost (selected currency): Matching invoice, quote, statement, bookkeeping record or explicit budget amount for option b cost. Use the stated period and exclude amounts already counted in another field. Zero means intentionally excluded/not incurred, not unknown.
- Annual distance for each vehicle (mi): Equal annual distance for both alternatives from logs or an explicit use assumption.

Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Option A present cost is $22,204.90 for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Option A initial cost: $10,000.00
- Option B initial cost: $14,000.00
- Common comparison horizon: 5 years
- Annual discount rate: 5.00 %
- Option A resale at horizon: $1,000.00
- Option B resale at horizon: $2,000.00
- Annual future costs
- Year: 1 year
- Option A cost: $3,000.00
- Option B cost: $1,800.00
- Year: 2 year
- Option A cost: $3,000.00
- Option B cost: $1,800.00
- Year: 3 year
- Option A cost: $3,000.00
- Option B cost: $1,800.00
- Year: 4 year
- Option A cost: $3,000.00
- Option B cost: $1,800.00
- Year: 5 year
- Option A cost: $3,000.00
- Option B cost: $1,800.00
- Annual distance for each vehicle: 12,427.423844746678 mi
- A present cost per lifetime mile
- $0.36
- B present cost per lifetime mile
- $0.33
- Option A present cost
- $22,204.90
- Option B present cost
- $20,226.01
- A minus B present cost
- $1,978.90
- Lower present cost
- Option B
- A present cost per lifetime kilometre
- $0.22
- B present cost per lifetime kilometre
- $0.20
- First year-end cumulative crossover
- 4 year
- Option A is fuel; B is electric. Crossover is checked at year ends only, including end resale; later reversals remain visible in the table. Cost per kilometre divides present cost by undiscounted lifetime distance.

Use the result well
Compare supplied vehicle purchase energy upkeep and resale scenarios.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
