Your inputs

Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.

How this calculation works

project contribution = revenue - entered direct job costs; contribution/crew-day = contribution / (crews × elapsed days per crew)

For residential or commercial company costing. Use supplied job records, measured labor and quoted total expenses. No material takeoff, shopping list, supplier sourcing, code interpretation, engineering design or legal entitlement is provided. The same number of crews is assumed occupied for the entered duration; split changing crew allocations into an equivalent total crew-day basis. Contribution is not company net profit. Comparing contribution alone does not establish project feasibility, payment certainty or staffing safety.

What information do I need?

Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.

Input definitions and where to find them
  • Net project revenue for supplied scope (selected currency): Job sales/direct-cost ledger and observed crew-days. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Direct project costs before company fixed overhead: Job sales/direct-cost ledger and observed crew-days. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
    • Cost description: Job sales/direct-cost ledger and observed crew-days. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
    • Cost amount (selected currency): Job sales/direct-cost ledger and observed crew-days. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Independent crews occupied by project (crews): Job sales/direct-cost ledger and observed crew-days. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
  • Elapsed days occupied per crew (days): Job sales/direct-cost ledger and observed crew-days. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.

Worked example

Example amounts use US dollars (USD).

Example answer: Contribution per occupied crew-day is $600.00 for the illustrative inputs below.

Example inputs
  • Net project revenue for supplied scope: $30,000.00
  • Direct project costs before company fixed overhead
      • Cost description: Expense 1
      • Cost amount: $12,000.00
      • Cost description: Expense 2
      • Cost amount: $6,000.00
  • Independent crews occupied by project: 2 crews
  • Elapsed days occupied per crew: 10.00 days

Use the result well

Compare own residential/commercial jobs per occupied crew capacity.

Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
