Farming equipment
Farm implement effective field capacity
Translate supplied width, actual working speed and observed or assumed field efficiency into acres per working hour.
Your inputs
Complete the fields for your selected method. Zero means intentionally zero, not unknown. Currency selection labels amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.
How this calculation works
effective area/hour = working width × working speed × field efficiency
This is an enterprise-budget worksheet using supplied quantities, prices and assumptions. No feeding ration, treatment, stocking rate, fertilizer, pesticide, yield forecast or equipment suitability is prescribed. Efficiency accounts for overlap, turning and relevant interruptions. It must come from observations or an explicit scenario, not a hidden industry average. Hours exclude transport/repair time unless included in the efficiency input. This does not establish safe speed or suitable implement width.
What information do I need?
Use records for the same job, equipment or accounting period. Only the fields for your selected entry method are required. An unknown amount is not zero.
Input definitions and where to find them
- Effective working width (in): Effective width, observed speed/efficiency or measured capacity. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Actual working travel speed (mph): Effective width, observed speed/efficiency or measured capacity. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Observed or assumed field efficiency (%): Effective width, observed speed/efficiency or measured capacity. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
- Area planned for this operation (acre): Effective width, observed speed/efficiency or measured capacity. Owner records or explicit assumption; no account connection or maintained rate tables required.
Use the Where to find this value controls beside the inputs for available work-it-out helpers. Estimates remain your assumptions; a helper does not verify the source figures.
Worked example
Example amounts use US dollars (USD).
Example answer: Effective field capacity is 8.90 acres/hour for the illustrative inputs below.
Example inputs
- Effective working width: 236.220472440945 in
- Actual working travel speed: 4.970969537899 mph
- Observed or assumed field efficiency: 75.00 %
- Area planned for this operation: 100.00 acre
- Effective field capacity
- 8.90 acres/hour
- Working hours needed for entered area
- 11.24 hours
These illustrative values are not recommended rates or industry averages. Replace every example input with your own figures.
Use the result well
Compare stated capacity/work-window cases.
Keep inputs on the same scope and time basis. Calculations retain precision internally; displayed values generally round to two decimal places, with extra precision for very small values and whole-unit rounding where required. Economic comparisons describe your supplied assumptions and do not guarantee future results.
